More than 12,000 tablets of OxyContin, worth close to half a million dollars on the street, were acquired through a scam using fake prescriptions by fifty-six government employees. A total of 62 people were arrested
The Miami, Florida employees included 27 school bus drivers, 2 corrections officers, a police officer and a felony court clerk.
It is estimated that 130 OxyContin prescriptions, all medically unnecessary, were filled at local pharmacies. OxyContin, or “Oxy”, is a potent painkiller with a high level of abuse and a high rate of addiction. When crushed and snorted or used intravenously Oxy delivers an instant rush. When many are taken whole, an OxyContin high can last for many hours.
According to authorities, the insurance and prescription fraud scam included:
• 17 Miami-Dade County Public Schools bus drivers
• 10 Public Schools bus attendants
• Six City of Miami Department of Solid Waste employees
• Five Public Schools security officers
• Three Miami-Dade County Public Schools custodians
• Two Miami-Dade County corrections officers
• Two Public Schools teacher assistants
• Two County Transit bus drivers
• One City of Hialeah police officer
• One City of Miami crane operator
• One Circuit Court felony clerk
