In the first large-scale study of home medication consumption, sociologists at the University of California, San Diego discovered an increase of over 3,000 percent in domestic medication errors involving alcohol and/or street drugs that resulted in a death.

The study examines nearly 50 million U.S. and has found that allowing patients to monitor their own meds can be fatal; the recent death of actor Heath Ledger is just one example.
