It’s been said that drug use is a “victimless crime,” but for methamphetamine addicts, it’s certainly not true-especially for those with children in their homes. Many users of methamphetamine -a.k.a. “meth”-manufacture the drug in makeshift, homemade “labs,” using ingredients that can be easily found in household cleaners and over-the-counter allergy medications. When combined, these chemicals pose a deadly threat not only to the meth users but to anyone in the immediate area.
Over at Some Chicks Blog comes the news that, proof or not, a new website is posting more than just Homes for Sale. Rottenneighbor is the new site, and according to Some Chick:
” Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to query the site with the term “meth” and see how many such homes have been labeled in one way or another with this term. In fact there were over 100 listings of homes in neighborhoods across America with titles like “Hillbilly meth lab” in Orange CA, “meth smoking parolees” in Hawthorne CA, “nights of the living meth heads” in Atlanta GA, and “get your meth here” in Mitchell OR.”
The DEA has seized approximately 6,000 U. S. meth labs in the past couple of years, opening up an opportunity for Mexican drug cartels to export the drug to th U.S.
Although Mexican authorities have also been working to keep the drugs used to make meth unavailable, the drug lords are finding ways to import the chemicals- thwarting the authorities’ efforts.
Recent clamp-downs by the U. S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) have included moving the over the counter drugs used to make meth (Pseudoephedrine , ephedrine) behind the counter; those efforts have not stopped Mexico from becoming the number one supplier for the drug.
The United Nations’ Office on Drugs and Crime recently released its annual World Drug Report which stated that there are 24.9 million usersof methamphetamines world-wide, with more than 12 million meth addicts in the U.S.
