A study carried out by the Universities of Bonn and Sweden’s Karolinska Institute concluded that a specific gene variant may cause women to be more susceptible to alcoholism. The gene, located in the endorphin metabolism, is altered more often in women alcoholics than in non-alcoholic women. The endorphins seem to play an important role in the amount of alcohol consumed in mice as well, particularly among females.
